Baby Blankets – The Best Kind to Have For Your Baby

19 March 2010 | Written by Baby Cherish

The baby bed looks so empty without baby blankets. It is just a sheet over the mattress, with very little personality. Choosing the proper blankets for your baby is not just about being pretty, they need to be functional, too.

The baby blankets you find in most stores are very cute, with pretty decorations covering them. They are fuzzy and fun. Most times these are not the blankets you really want to use for your baby. They are too hot and heavy. Often, they have small ribbons and other decorations which might come off. You need safe simple blankets for your baby.

The most used, and most efficient blankets are the simple receiving baby blankets. You can use these to swaddle your baby, wrapping them up snugly. This keeps them warm, and makes them feel more secure. For newborns, being wrapped up tightly in a blanket helps them feel as if they were in the womb. They sleep easily, and deeply. When you are shopping for baby blankets, this is the style to stock up on. You will want a wide selection of these simple blankets. They work great as a substitute for a spit-up cloth or towel, too.

There are many small baby blankets which are very cute, which can still be effective. You can find blankets with Dora the Explorer, Mickey Mouse, and Veggie Tales. All of these varied styles can add more excitement and fun to your baby’s room. The decorative style of baby blankets are great as your baby grows.

One of the favorite baby blankets for any mother are the ones hand crafted by friends or family members. These hand made blankets are not just for warmth, but are treasures which will be held onto and appreciated for decades. If you are the one creating the blanket, keep in mind to not have small strings, ribbons, and other small items the baby may pull off. If you add those items the blanket may not be used, because it represents a choking hazard to the baby.

One thing to avoid is using your own blankets for your baby. They are too big, and too heavy. It is easy for older babies to pull the blanket over their head, and then not be able to pull it back off. The smaller lighter blankets are easy for them to both pull over their head, but also easy to pull back off of their face.

Some baby blankets are very thick, like comforters. These styles of blankets may not be the best for covering up your baby, but they are excellent for your baby to lay on, and play on. Having a variety of styles of blankets is a great idea. You will be ready for any situation.

One more important thing to watch for. Make sure all blankets you buy are machine washable. They will be getting dirty very easily, and will need washing often. You do not want fancy blankets which require dry cleaning. By choosing a well rounded set of baby blankets, you will be ready for fun in bed, and on the floor.
