Adorning your baby’s hair is great fun. It helps to bring their beautiful little face to the forefront, making your baby look even cuter. Baby hair accessories need to be looked at carefully and selected to make sure your baby remains safe.
This surprises some parents to discover there is risk involved with many of the hair accessories sold for babies. The risk varies depending on the type of baby hair accessories you buy. Choosing head wraps and headbands are by far the most safe hair adornment, and ones you can use without much worry. They are large, and do not present any great risk.
The items you need to worry about the most are the smaller hair clips and hair ties which many parents love to use. They look great, putting small hearts, stars, and other little decorations into your babies hair. You need to stop and consider one important fact, they are small. You would not let your little baby play with toys which were this small, would you?
You may argue these hair pieces are placed towards the back of the baby’s head and are not easy for them to grab. You need to watch your baby a little closer. After a couple months it is easy for them to reach to the back of their head and they will grasp onto any small object they find. Those cute little hair clips and ties will come right out and then they head straight towards your baby’s mouth. It is very easy for a baby to choke on these smaller items.
Before you get too alarmed, just understand you will need to use smaller hair accessories with more caution. They are great if your are going to keep a very close eye on your baby. They are great for taking pictures and then taking them back out. As your baby gets older they are much safer, too. Once your baby understands everything does not go in their mouth to get tasted or swallowed you can start using them regularly, this is likely to be sometime after their first birthday.
As you are probably guessing, the best hair decorations, and baby hair accessories are the much larger pieces. Even when they are pulled off by your baby and brought to their mouth there is not a choking hazard. Some of the hair bands can be pulled down around their necks, but they are much larger in diameter than their tiny neck so are still very safe.
There is a cautionary note which needs to go along with the larger baby hair accessories, too. Look them over carefully and make sure the decorative pieces are firmly attached. Those pretty ribbons, flowers, and characters need to be attached so they do not pull off easily and head to the mouth. Hair decorations do not need to be avoided, you just need to use the same common sense you do when giving your baby toys. Choose pieces you know are safe. Watch your baby closely, then enjoy all the beautiful pictures, and the ooh’s and ah’s of your admiring family.
