How To Come Up With A Baby Shower Theme

26 March 2010 | Written by Baby Cherish

Are you the lucky person who volunteered to do the baby shower for your friend or sister? Now the challenge is to come up with a baby shower theme she will love. It is time to start stretching your imagination, and memory.

One of the best ways to choose a baby shower theme is to insist the expectant mother create a gift registry. You can quickly look through her gift registry and see what theme she is choosing for her baby. Maybe she is going with all Disney, Sesame Street, or other characters for the gifts and furnishings. This would give you the instant answer to your prayers. You can just take her theme for the nursery and bring it into the baby shower. Of course, many mothers never have a consistent theme, leaving you still lost in the wilderness searching for ideas.

When secretly discovering her theme fails, then it is time to become a real detective to come up with a baby shower theme. One fun idea, if you are a life long friend or family member, try to remember back when the mother was a little girls and what she loved. You can create your ideas from her passions as a young child into a great theme for her new baby. If you do not remember, you can quiz her mother, or look back at old photo albums.

Another way to use the historical ideas is to bring them into the future. If she loved Disney as a child, do a theme which takes Disney from the time of her youth, bringing it forward into the current day. You will have created a theme which bridges from the youth of the mother to the time of her new infant. It can be a very touching way to show the continuance through the generations in the family.

Baby shower themes do not need to be tricky. If all else fails, go with the old tried and true methods of creating an all pink theme if she is expecting a girl, or a blue theme for a boy. It may not be as tricky or clever, but it is always loved. If you combine it with some pictures of her and her husband as babies, and include a stolen ultrasound picture of the upcoming baby, you can create a great baby shower theme.

The biggest thing to remember when coming up with a baby shower theme, it is not the party plates, decorations, punch, cake, and games which count. It is the friends coming together to celebrate with her. It is the knowledge her friends and family are excited to be part of the birth of her baby. The laughter, talking, joking, and fun of the day is what she will remember, not the decorations. Your main theme should always be the guest list, not the decorations. Everything else will work out just fine. With her friends and family all in attendance she will know you made the proper choice of theme, it is called friendship and love.

I just went to a shower where the mommy-to-be had a vintage nursery theme and it was so cute. She had used myregistry.com to register for authentic vintage baby bedding and decor–a lot of it from Etsy–and it was the most unique registry I’ve ever seen. I thought it was nice to do something different and something about the way things used to be made just seems like higher quality.
