The baby is almost here. Your due date is right around the corner, and your first baby shower is coming up quickly. You are thinking about all of those new born baby clothes you bought in preparation, and the ones you are expecting at the shower. You are starting to feel really good about things.

Wait a minute, did you just say you already bought new born baby clothes, and the shower is still coming up? You might be making one of the big mistakes new parents make almost every time. Have you guessed already?

Your newborn baby is going to be tiny, cute, and has one more really important trait. Your little newborn is going to grow like crazy. Starting to get the picture? You have started stocking up on newborn items, you expect more newborn items, and in about two months they will all be too small. Yes, it happens almost that fast.

What do you really need in new born baby clothes? You need to have a nice assortment of cute little outfits for all of those special events which will happen after the baby is born. You will have family gatherings, you might have a Christening, possibly a baby naming ceremony, and of course the required visit to the office with the baby.

For the rest of the time, you know what your newborn baby really needs? Nice little white cotton outfits to help them regulate temperature and stay dry. They are going to be eating, sleeping, and spit-up machines. Most days you will not be taking them out. You need just simple items for your newborn baby.

If you still have time before the shower you might want to start changing your requests to have clothes for a variety of age ranges. Ask for 1 to 3 month outfits, and 3 to 6 month outfits. This makes sure you have outfits as your baby continues to grow rapidly during those first few months. You are not going to end up with a dresser and closet filled with new born baby clothes which never get worn because you baby outgrew them so rapidly. Which would you rather have, a smaller selection of outfits they wear a few times each, or a lot of outfits which get worn only once, and then are no longer needed?

If you want to ask for anything in plentiful supply for a newborn, ask for several bags of diapers. You will go through those rapidly. With all of the eating and sleeping comes one other thing, full diapers on a very regular basis. You will go through many bags of diapers before they graduate to the next size.

Hopefully this helps you plan for a more successful start to your baby’s life. Having enough new born baby clothes is necessary, but having an overabundance is not. You will be much happier knowing you are prepared for a few months, rather than just that first precious month.
