Organic Baby Clothes – Organic What?

07 August 2010 | Written by Baby Cherish

Are you sick and tired of hearing organic this and organic that? You have decided to buy organic baby food, because you know it is better, but organic baby clothes? Why in the world would you buy organic clothes for your baby? You might want to stop and think a little longer before you decide no.

Organic baby clothes are not any more comfortable. They are not warmer. They will not keep your baby drier in the rain. They have no special qualities, except purity.

Stop for a moment and think about what happens to cotton or wool when it is processed for most clothing. First, cotton will be grown using fertilizer and pesticides to control insects. The sheep are fed feed which was grown using pesticides, and are likely be sprayed to prevent fleas and other tiny mites or parasites.

Once these natural fibers are harvested, they head to a factory. At the factory they are cleaned and bleached with harsh, powerful chemicals. They are then spun into thread, woven into fabric, which may be on your back, or on your baby’s back. After the clothing is made, it is often starched, and then treated with a preservative to make sure they stay looking and smelling new. It is an amazing amount of processes.

Now, did you notice anything of concern? How much residual pesticide and chemicals may still be in that fabric? How much damage did those chemicals do to the planet your child is going to inherit? Will the chemicals irritate your baby’s sensitive skin?

Let us take a look at a different picture. Organic cotton is grown with no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Organic wool is from sheep who are fed organic foods, and are not treated with chemicals.

When these natural fibers go to a factory to become organic fabrics, they are cleaned with organic solutions, and are subjected to primarily water. They are woven into fabrics, sent to factories, and treated with tender loving care. They are not sprayed down with chemicals to give them a starched, crisp look. They are kept soft and natural.

Now, are you starting to see the bigger picture of why organic baby clothes might be important? Your baby’s skin will be wearing either a product which has seen many chemicals before arriving, or one which has been kept almost chemical free. Which is better for your baby?

It is not only your baby’s skin today which makes organic baby clothes important. It is keeping the chemicals out of the ground, the water, and the air which is important to their future, too. By buying organic, you help to preserve a cleaner world for your children.

The choice of buying organic baby clothes is not as simple as it first seems. You will pay a little extra, but the tender touch of organic fabrics on their skin is well worth it. They may not be warmer, drier, or have any better style, but their sensitive skin may very well know the difference.
